Sew a Ruffled / Frill Leather Clutch

Made to Sew shares a step by step sewing tutorial for stitching a cute clutch bag using a lightweight leather with a ruffle across the front. A very basic design that most beginners can master. You will need a 4" zipper. If you have a leather sewing machine needle, use it. A leather needle has a small triangle or chisel shape at the tip that will pierce the leather. A Teflon foot or a walking foot is helpful but not absolutely necessary, it will help your leather to move under the foot more smoothly while you sew. If you don't have a Teflon foot, try using clear tape on the underside of your regular foot to create a smoother, non-stick surface. Try to use a strong thread to sew leather. Nylon thread or a 100% polyester thread will be stronger, cotton thread can rot when used to sew leather due to the oils naturally present in the leather. If you are using a pleather or a soft vinyl, that may not matter, however a strong poly or nylon thread will last longer.
