DIY Leather and Burlap Feed Bag Tote - Free Bag Making Video by Jimmy Diresta
jimmydiresta

A free video tutorial by JimmyDiresta that demonstrates how to create these unique tote bags using leather and recycled feed bags. Drawing inspiration from modern bag construction techniques, the Jimmy chose to showcase the character and texture of the feed bags by pairing them with soft leather, resulting in a design that feels both rugged and refined.

The bag making process begins with thoroughly cleaning and drying the feed bags. Washing softens the material and gently fades the print, giving it a naturally weathered look that works beautifully with leather. Once dry, the feed bags are cut slightly oversized so they can be carefully shaped to fit the leather panels. The edges are stabilized with adhesive to prevent fraying, then trimmed and temporarily stitched in place to hold everything securely during assembly. To further protect the fabric, the top edge of the leather is rolled outward, creating a smooth, beaded finish that encases the raw burlap edge.

Construction continues with reinforcing the base of the bag for strength and structure. The leather panels are sewn together with attention to durability, including reinforced seams and a flat-bottom technique that allows the tote to stand upright. Hardware such as D-rings are added at the corners for versatility, with small details like adhesive under rivets ensuring the burlap feed bag fabric remains neat and intact over time.

The final steps focus on the straps. Leather is cut, shaped, and finished with beveled, burnished edges for comfort and longevity. The leather straps are carefully aligned, punched, and riveted to the bag, creating a secure attachment that complements the overall design.
